About Solar Water Pump
A solar water pump is a trending concept in the irrigation and water supplying field. A solar water pumping system is a composition of solar panels, solar inverter, solar pump/electric motor, and solar batteries. Solar water pumping system operates on solar power generated by solar panels. These pumps are widely used in remote locations to supply the water that can be used to irrigate crops, water livestock, or provide potable drinking water.
The solar pump installation consists of solar panels, oriented in such a way that they can get a maximum of solar energy. When sunlight falls on these solar panels they transform it into the direct current (DC). This energy is used to feed the motor to pump out the water. In case, the motor requires an alternating current (AC), a solar inverter is being used to convert the DC current into AC current.
Solar water pumps are replacing traditional electric pumps all over the world. The reason is their high ROR, low maintenance, and no running cost. Traditional water pumps require a large amount of electricity which has a high cost. The only solution to this problem is solar water pumps that not only save money but our planet too by reducing air pollution. We can say that solar water pumps result in both socio-economic benefits as well as climate-related benefits to us.
Types Of Solar Water Pump
Solar power water pumps are manufactured and designed in several types. Each type of solar pump is different from others on the basis of their power capacity, working criteria, etc. The solar water pumps are classified into four types that are as mentioned below.
Solar Submersible Pump
Solar submersible water pumps are mainly used in places wherever water is available at larger depth. The suction head of the submersible pump is beyond a depth of 15 meters. These solar pumps are capable of lifting water from depths up to 50 meters. Solar submersible pumps are the most popular solar pumps in India because the depth of water is more in most parts of India. Mostly, the installation of a submersible pump is done by digging a bore well. A submersible pump can lift the water very easily without using grid power throughout the day. Normally after lifting the water, it is stored in a tank to be utilized later as required.
Solar Surface Pump
A solar surface pump is used to lift the water from ponds, wells, storage tanks, or other shallow places whether the depth of the water is 15 feet or less than 15 feet from the surface. In this type of solar pump, a submerged pump is placed inside the well/pond in such a way that it does not lose contact with the water and work as long as there is water in the well or pond. These pumps are capable to push the water around 200 feet. These pumps are easier to install and maintain compared to submersible pumps.
Other Technologies' Solar Pump
In solar water pumps, there are three technologies through which we can power solar submersible and solar surface pumps whether it is a DC pump or an AC pump. These modern technologies can even convert an existing water pump into a solar pump. Let’s have a look below to learn about these technologies.
- Solar Pump VFD Drive
- Hybrid Solar PV Pump (Solar power + Grid electricity + Battery)
- On-Grid Solar PV Pump (With Net Metering)

Solar Water Pump - FAQs
What is a solar water pump?
A solar water pump is like a traditional water pumping system that is powered by solar energy instead of grid electricity.
What is the difference between the DC pump and the AC pump?
A DC pump runs on a motor that operates on direct current while an AC pump runs on a motor that operates on alternating current.
Does a solar water pump work during cloudy and foggy days?
Yes, by adding solar batteries to your solar pumps, you can use them even in cloudy or foggy days.
Should I use a submersible or a surface pump?
The selection of a solar pump is based on the depth of the water level from the surface. If you want to lift the water up to 15 meters than install a solar surface pump or beyond 15 meters, go for a submersible solar water pump.
How much area can a solar water pump irrigate?
The irrigating land or area may vary according to the groundwater levels and the type of irrigation required for a particular crop. But on the average basis, it can be said that a 2 HP pump can cater to about two acres of land and a 7.5 HP is said to cater to 10 acres of land.
What are the various capacities at which solar water pumps are available in the market?
Solar water pumps are available in various capacities and ratings from 1HP to 10HP.
Is it possible to relocate the solar pump system after installation?
Yes, a solar pumping system can relocate after once it gets installed. However, the relocation of solar pumps is not recommended by solar experts.
What are the different types of solar water pumps?
There are solar submersible solar water pumps and surface solar water pumps. Both types of the solar water pump can be powered by DC and AC power. Also, there are some other technologies to power these solar water pumps such as solar pump VFD drive, hybrid solar PV pump, and on-grid solar PV pump.
Does there any government subsidy to promote solar water pumps?
